You can’t beat homemade playdough – sooooo much nicer than the horrid shop bought stuff that dries out within minutes. Cheap, quick and dead easy to make, it keeps for ages as long as you store it properly (cling film or airtight box) and keep it dry. You can add food colour to whip up different colour batches, sprinkle in some glitter, add things like porridge oats or rice for texture, vanilla or peppermint essence… tons of possibilities and variations!
There are so many different playdough recipes out there and believe me I’ve tried most of them. But this is the one I come back to again and again – foolproof and works a treat every time. I’m often asked by the mums who attend my classes to share my recipe so here it is :
2 cups plain flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 cup salt
2 tablespoons oil
2 cups water
food colouring (optional)
Put all of the ingredients into a pan and mix well – I recommend a balloon whisk and strong muscles for this step. Pop the pan onto a low heat and stir continuously. You’ll know when the dough is cooked as if you roll a small piece in your hand it won’t feel sticky or leave a trace.
